Professor Mangini ENG 100 4 May 2017 Why a Growth Mindset? Carol Dweck, a Stanford University professor says “Many authority figures like parents and teachers praise for process, not intelligence” (Dweck). Your mind is full of imaginative thoughts and every person has different processes on how they learn and how much knowledge they can take in. Everyone in the world learns in different ways and they also believe in certain ways to learn and behave. There are two different mindsets that people take up on. There is a fixed mindset, which is when you believe that you are born to know certain things and your learning cannot evolve and a growth mindset, which means your knowledge can increase and you will continue to learn, improve, and correct yourself. A growth mindset has helped me become a more successful college student because it helped me learn not to give up as well as helped me strengthen my confidence. Dweck created and posted a famous video called, “Power In Believing You Can Improve” and it's turnout was successful. Dweck gave examples on how having a growth mindset is beneficial for students and how a person can increase their mind and thoughts in a view online. Dweck told viewers that a person can continue to learn and their knowledge can expand. Dweck gave examples of how some people can develop a growth mindset. She told her viewers that kindergartners in New York came into school barely knowing how to hold a pencil, but ended the year scoring in the 90th percentile (Dweck). Dweck also said that students in school would take a test and those who did not pass, also did not fail. Instead of failing, students would luckily receive a “not yet” grade. The “not yet” grade meant that they did not fail, but did not pass either. They simply just had to retake that test and try and earn a better grade (Dweck). Stretching your mind out and grasping new information is a great way to learn and is very different than being someone with a fixed mindset. The growth mindset approach helps a student feel more confident and more accepting to their work because they are constantly hearing, “You did your best, awesome job!” Parents and many teachers try to motivate students by telling them that if they put effort in, they will get some credit for the effort they put in the work (Kohn). Many people often argue on this because some people believe that students should not get credit for effort, they should get credit for correctness. Meanwhile, others disagree. After receiving half credit on some work that may not be right, teachers often consider new ideas to help a student re-word, redo problems, and redo essays to help a student create a better outcome (Kohn). This process help students move forward, feel comfortable, and get better grades after being corrected (Kohn). Dweck explained how there is something called the “Cheat vs Study which meant that if a student did not do as well, they would cheat their way through or they would study to get a better grade. Educational experiences, in my opinion, promote both fixed and growth mindsets (Dweck). Adapting to a growth mindset has helped me realized that I should never give up. For example, if I do not do as well on an exam as I thought I did, I learned that I should never chat my way out of something. In Dweck's discussion on “cheat vs study,” she was talking about students cheating their way through a class if they could not understand it. As a student myself, I will never learn that way and I may need to know it in the near future, so why not receive help from my professor? Another example was during my senior year of highschool. In my last year and last semester of highschool, I had a math teacher that constantly got aggravated with students in the class for being confused with the math questions. He often got angry when too many students would ask a lot of questions and rarely stayed after school to help those who struggled with math. Unfortunately, I was one of the people who struggled and he constantly got annoyed with the questions I asked, which resulted in me getting low test grades almost all the time. Not to mention, I had this teacher for two years in a row for different math courses that were held at my high school. In the end, I thankfully I passed the class by just enough points due to all of my effort and constant studying. Here's the twist, as a freshman in college, I had to pick classes for my first semester. I was extremely nervous about taking a math course because I thought I was terrible at math, but I knew I needed to take a few math courses in order to become a registered nurse in the future. I gained the confidence and picked a math course and I am beyond grateful I took the class. I had such a great professor who actually took time to sit with me and helped me understand math. He helped me realize that I was not as bad in math as I thought I was, I was just too hard on myself and having a teacher like I had in highschool did not help me. My professor this year even stayed later after class was over to make sure I understood what was going on. He knew I stressed about math, so he was a HUGE help. I needed that extra push and confidence and my professor gave me just that. I ended up passing his class with a “B” and I could not be anymore proud of myself as well as being grateful for the professor I had during my first semester of college. With the “cheat vs study” idea, I was more of a growth mindset who continued to study and get help until I eventually understood what I was doing. I never cheated my way through it even thought about it because I knew I had to know how to do certain math problems to become a nurse. I may have took much longer to study, but I can happily say that I overcame my troubles with math because I constantly kept trying my best. I continued to study, do practice problems, and I completed all assignments. I also received help and support I received from my professor before and after class when I needed it. As a result, I became more successful and I am still continuing to learn. “As the growth mindset has become more popular and taken hold, we are beginning to find that there are pitfalls,” says Dweck (Barshay). Although Dweck's theories are not perfect. and she admits that there are some downfalls; she also argues that there are children, teens and adults who have more of a fixed mindset and believe that who develops a growth mindset can set goals and achieve them. Our brains are able to grow with new information learned. Dweck says, “many teachers have to change how they teach, offering more critical feedback and giving students opportunities to revise their work” (Barshay). In the book, ‘Mindset: The New Psychology of Success’ Carol Dweck says, “Did I win? Did I lose? Those are the wrong questions. The correct question is: Did I make my best effort?” If so, he says, “You may be outscored but you will never lose” (Dweck). Dweck was referring to a person's effort they make to improve. Dweck believes that its not about winning or losing anything, but it is to be able to show an effort. I believe that having a growth mindset has helped me become a more successful college student rather than having a fixed mindset personally. Having a fixed mindset in my opinion is more stressful and made me feel as if I had to stop trying to advance in my work. Not everyone is perfect or an “all-star.” Having a growth mindset helped me strengthen my effort and become a better me than I was before. Having a growth mindset has helped me regain confidence and I will feel more motivated to continue to work hard on all of my work, Doing great at something is not always the accomplishment, but your effort is. A Place Called “Home”
It was the day after my birthday, a Saturday morning to be exact. There was a strong smell of bacon and eggs that seemed to have flooded my room. As I open my eyes and rubbed them, all I can see is everything in my room because my door was half shut. My room was covered and filled with 101 dalmation toys, decorations, comforter and I even had dalmatian stuffed animals all over my bed. My walls were covered in the color white and I had large black spots on the walls. I looked around the room wondering where that delicious smell was coming from. I realized the smell was coming from down stairs. I took my feet out from under my blankets and place each foot onto my carpeted floor. I fix my bed so it is ready for me to hop back into later that night. I put each foot into my pink slippers in which I wore to go down stairs. I then open my door and walked down the brown carpeted stairs, I could hear a frying pan sizzling and dishes clunking together as if they were being washed. As I walked down to almost the bottom of the stairs, I looked at the small peachy colored walls full of family photos on each wall. I then looked over at the kitchen table and noticed breakfast was ready. I looked around the table and I saw fluffy pancakes with melted butter scooped on top with maple syrup drizzling down the stacks of pancakes, another plate was full of warm gooey sticky buns, and the other few plates were full of fruits, bacon, and hash browns. My dad was standing by the stove cooking up eggs to complete our breakfast and my mom was washing the few dishes that were in the sink. Everyone else in my family was sitting at the table, even my grandpa, who I was excited about because he was staying with us for a couple days. As I walked around the table, I looked outback at my giant backyard that had a swing set, trampoline, and moon bounce set up. I quickly sat down in the open seat that was left for me. I sat next to my grandpa of course and that is when I asked my parents why I had a moon bounce outback. I was about nine years old at the time, going on ten years old and my mother said, “Today's your special day! We are having your birthday party today.” As I heard her saying these words, my body felt full of excitement. I knew my mom and dad had special things planned, because they always threw me the best birthday parties every year. It was even better because my grandpa who was staying with us at the time, along with other family members and friends would join me on my special day. I was excited because my grandpa always surprised me with different kinds of entertainment for my party. One year, he hired someone from the actual circus to come over and perform tricks, another year he had a magician come and do magic tricks. It was my tenth birthday and I was sure he had another special thing planned. My grandpa was my best friend growing up, he always took me on the best adventures like the zoo and to the beach. I was beyond happy and excited to spend another birthday with him along with everyone else. Around five o'clock that same day, my friends, family, and neighbors started to arrive. By then, my house was full of balloons and a giant vanilla cake with chocolate icing on the table, which was my absolute favorite. My backyard was full of party games, confetti, my trampoline was set up, my outside toys were out of my shed, a piñata was tied up to a tree and other birthday decorations were all over my yard. We set up a lot chairs for everyone to sit on because we invited a lot of people. As I helped bring the chairs out, that is when my grandpa told me he has yet again, another special surprise. I smiled from ear to ear after hearing him tell me that. I knew that he always gave the best birthday surprises and they only got better each year! I felt so much happiness fill my body because I knew my birthday party was going to be great! He explained how he has someone with horses and monkeys on their way over to my house. I had no idea how he knows people like that, but then again, he knew anyone and everyone. Moments later after telling me what my surprise was, three men pulled up to my house with two trucks with a trailer hooked to each of them. The trailers held two brown horses and the two different kind of monkeys. We sat down and took turns riding on the horses around my backyard, which was huge! We also sat down and held baby chimpanzee and a spider monkey on our laps and fed each one with a bottle. My friends, family and I all took pictures with the monkeys; along with playing on the moon bounce and everything else I had in my backyard. The whole time, I was thinking about how thankful I was to always have fun and entertaining birthday parties. Everyone was having a great time, including myself. It was yet again, another wonderful birthday party thanks to everyone who helped and showed up, especially my parents and my grandpa who was always giving me the best surprises each year. About three years after my tenth birthday party, my grandpa needed to get his knee drained because he had fallen down steps in his house. He was in excruciating pain for weeks. There was too much fluid in his knee and it started to swell up within a few days after he fell. My mom had to beg him to get it checked out because he always tried to be tough whenever he was hurt. He ended up listening to my mom and went into Taylor Hospital, in Ridley Park. He got his knee checked out and the doctors in the hospital told him that he needed a quick and painless procedure done; which was draining his knee to eliminate the extra fluids. After his procedure was done, he had to stay in the hospital for a few more hours because a nurse had given him pain medication and needed to be monitored after taking. Unfortunately, that “pain medication” happened to be bleach. Mistakingly, the nurse did not realize she switched bleach with liquid pain medication and my grandpa had drank it without even realizing it because he was in so much pain. He quickly went into cardiac arrest after drinking it and was immediately placed into ICU and hooked up to all different kinds of wires and machines. Days later, there was little to no brain activity and doctors kept saying he was only getting worse. The doctors suggested sending him to Bryn Mawr Hospital, my family agreed and had him sent there right away. Bryn Mawr took wonderful care of him and gave him everything he needed. Yet, there was still little to no brain activity. After a few more days, he silently passed away in the hospital. If it was not for his knee drain and the nurse accidentally giving him bleach, he would still be here today. Still, to this day, I will never understand how someone can mix up bleach and a liquid medicine. My grandpa always loved his family and did so much to help whoever was in need. Everyone around our town knew him and loved him. He was an all around great guy and it just saddens my family that the cause of his death was because of a simple knee drain. My heart aches with the loss of such a genuine person, my “home” in which I can never go back to. About five months later, We moved out of our house to a house right across the street because my mom was pregnant with my brother Dylan, and later on three more other brothers. We needed a bigger house for my family. Plus, my mom could not bare sitting at a table in a house where she once saw her father every morning and now she can no longer see him. My old house was full of memories and experiences but why can I not go back to the house that is only right across the street? I can easily just walk across and see it. I can even look out my window and look at it.. but why can I not go back? It is simply because it was not just a house across the street, it was a “home” full of memories, stories, and experiences with an unforgettable person and that is something I can never get back. A woman named Dawn Jensen wrote a poem called, “Remember”
Remember "As I walk through life, I look at all I have done. I had wandered aimlessly, And wondered what I have become. I have been through so much. It is amazing I made it through. Lessons I have learned. I am shocked I pulled through. At times I wondered What life was all about. The trials experienced in life Can make all the good come out. We try to make it day by day, Remembering what we were taught. Just remember some time to pray. It is important; We need it every day. Life can be short, Unexpected at that. We try to take its punches, Just hoping it won't break our back. Remember who you are, Who you want to become. Everything will fall into place, When the time comes. Don't forget I love you's Every chance you get. The time may be short. There is no time to regret. Life can be exciting, As we all have found out, Eventful, even busy. There is no time to be left out. Remember who you are And who you want to become. The time can be short. Don't leave things undone. Remember your families, They are the only ones you've got To carry you in times of need. They cannot be bought. Remember they love you, Either here or there. They will always be with us, Help for things to bear." ( Source: https://www.familyfriendpoems.com/poem/advice-to-live-by ) I decided to choose and write about this poem because I thought it was very interesting. It made me get a better outlook on life and how we, as humans perceive it. Everyone is human and everyone is equal. Nobody should ever be ashamed or feel down on themselves. If you're positive all the time, you will feel better about yourself and your relationships with others. You should remember who you are and you should remember that you are what you make yourself out to be. Life is not always full of happiness, it has its downfalls, but that is when you pick yourself back up and shake it off. Everyone should be their own person as remember who they are and why they are here today. Cell phones are becoming more useful, yet taking away experiences from people all over the world. People are becoming more reliable on their cell phones for different things. There are many pros and cons to having a cell phone.
Not only are cell phones expensive to buy and use, but Cheating in school has become a huge issue because of a student's cell phone issue. Cell phones now have internet connection and it is very easy to just ‘click’ on google and search for answers. Cell phones can also be very distracting from more important events in a person's life. Cell phones can distract someone from their homework, work, relationships and their daily everyday life. They can even distract drivers in their car. Though cell phones have their cons, they also have pros in which they can be beneficial. Cell phone usage can create more creating, but on the other hand, it can create better study and learning habits. People can learn a new form of technology as well as learning what's on the internet and how to use it. This can help someone learn more information about things and can teach them how to do better research on projects or activities. Cell phones can also teach a child or teenager responsibility as well as safety. This teaches a person how to handle their phone without dropping or breaking it. It teaches someone that they can call or text someone if needed and can create security. Lastly, a cell phone can help with tracking. Cell phones have a GPS on the phone and can help someone reach their destination they are trying to reach. Nobody will get lost anymore if they have a functioning phone with a gps on it. Parents of younger children can also keep an eye on their child by tracking their phone to make sure they are not going to places they are unaware of. Cell phones have their pros and their cons, so many people have different thoughts and opinions on cell phones. Many people have them because of what they can do, but many choose not to have them because they can distract people from living their life. Psychology is the study of the behavior and mind of people all around the world. Everyone is different, but everyone learns and acts in different ways. Psychology is a newer science that is presented through observation of humans.
Psychology became my favorite class during my senior year in highschool; that's why I chose to take it again during my first year in college. Not only does psychology help students learn about the different conditions people are in, but it helps us, students learn how to adapt, get a better understanding, and help friends and family who are in need of help. In my psych class, I learned many things. I learned about the makeup of the brain and how each part works, different psychologists and their labs, long/short term memory, sleeping disorders, parenting styles, drugs and their effects and classical conditioning. This is my favorite class because you are not just learning about one thing. You learn about different kinds of things. You learn about yourself and other people's behaviors. You are not just sitting there doing math problems over and over, but learning about different behaviors and how the humans mind works. In this blog post, I will be watching a video called “Chefs Table” by Fransis Mallmann ( link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQ8Htm4jAGc). In this post, I will be answering the following questions about the video.
Question #1: How does this episode fit into the narrative mode? Questions #2: How does Mallman's story connect to the hiraeth story you are writing in this class? Consider his discussions about home and childhood. Question #3: What major ideas/themes from this episode connect to ideas/themes from our composition course? Consider Mallmann's argument about composing a good dish, examining his life environments, and being productive. Answer #1: This episode fits into narrative mode because it shows and tells the specific scene in which mallman lived. It showed what supplies and materials he and his sister had in the kitchen. Though, his sister will not return to the kitchen, mallmann always did because that kitchen is his “home.” Answer #2: Mallmans story connects to the hiraeth story we are writing about in class because he talked about his longing for a “home” which was in his case, an old kitchen in which he was eight years old at the time. He tries to recreate his “home” or ‘belonging” by continuing to cook around the world. Answer #3: Some major ideas/themes from this episode connect to ideas/themes from our composition course are things like “show don't tell” because mallmann showed and told the viewers watching how he lives his life in that kitchen. He talks about how he always comes back to his “home.” He uses his environment to create his dishes/food.
