In this blog post, I will be watching a video called “Chefs Table” by Fransis Mallmann ( link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQ8Htm4jAGc). In this post, I will be answering the following questions about the video.
Question #1: How does this episode fit into the narrative mode? Questions #2: How does Mallman's story connect to the hiraeth story you are writing in this class? Consider his discussions about home and childhood. Question #3: What major ideas/themes from this episode connect to ideas/themes from our composition course? Consider Mallmann's argument about composing a good dish, examining his life environments, and being productive. Answer #1: This episode fits into narrative mode because it shows and tells the specific scene in which mallman lived. It showed what supplies and materials he and his sister had in the kitchen. Though, his sister will not return to the kitchen, mallmann always did because that kitchen is his “home.” Answer #2: Mallmans story connects to the hiraeth story we are writing about in class because he talked about his longing for a “home” which was in his case, an old kitchen in which he was eight years old at the time. He tries to recreate his “home” or ‘belonging” by continuing to cook around the world. Answer #3: Some major ideas/themes from this episode connect to ideas/themes from our composition course are things like “show don't tell” because mallmann showed and told the viewers watching how he lives his life in that kitchen. He talks about how he always comes back to his “home.” He uses his environment to create his dishes/food.
